ACKNOWLEDGMENTS   I am greatly indebted to Professor C.E. Bosworth who supervised this thesis from its birth to its completion. My thanks go to him not only because of his constant help during my research, but also on a personal level for his kindness and patience throughout the period of time I have been working with him.
