POETICAL WORKS AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF SOCIAL LIFE IN MEDINA DURING THE TWELFTH/EIGHTEENTH CENTURY

At the outset it has to be admitted that we are faced with the immediate difficulty of finding sufficient material to illuminate any aspect of this period, as Gibb and Bowen have also noted (1) . Specifically concerning the study of social life in other Islamic countries, they suggested an indirect method of approach: "For the other countries it is necessary to adopt for the time being a more indirect method, either expanding the scattered data by analogy from the situation in Turkey and Egypt, or working backwards by inference from the latter changes and innovations" (2) .
In our study of the construction and the inter-factional relationships of Medina society in the twelfth/eighteenth century, we will depend principally on the unpublished poetical works and historical sources (both published and unpublished) which may throw some light on the darkness surrounding that period.
